A List of Ancient Khmer Temples Throughout Cambodia, Organized by Province

A List of Ancient Khmer Temples Throughout Cambodia, Organized by Province

Cambodia is a country with a rich ancient civilization and thousands of ancient temples and archaeological remains dating back to the Funan, Chenla, and Khmer Empire periods.

Before listing the temples, it is important to clarify the estimated numbers:

The Temple of Preah Vihear is situated in Choam Ksan District, Preah Vihear Province, in northern Cambodia, close to the international border with Thailand. It stands on a high mountain ridge of the Dangrek Mountains, approximately 625–657 metres above sea level, depending on the reference point used.

The temple occupies an extraordinary natural position. Unlike many other Khmer temples that were constructed on flat land, Preah Vihear was built along the slope and summit of a mountain. Its location provides magnificent views over the Cambodian plains.

The mountain itself was considered spiritually significant by ancient people. In Hindu religious traditions, mountains were associated with divine power and were often regarded as sacred places where the human world approached the world of the gods.

The ancient Khmer architects understood how to use the natural landscape to create a religious monument. Instead of destroying the mountain's natural shape, they incorporated its slopes, rocks, and elevated platforms into the temple's architectural design.

This relationship between nature, religion, and architecture is one of the main reasons why Preah Vihear is internationally recognized as an outstanding masterpiece of Khmer civilization.

### 2\. The Origins of Preah Vihear Temple: The 9th Century

The history of Preah Vihear Temple dates back to the ninth century, during the development of the Khmer Empire.

At that time, the Khmer civilization was expanding its political influence, religious institutions, agricultural systems, and architectural achievements throughout mainland Southeast Asia.

According to historical and archaeological evidence, the site initially developed as a religious hermitage or sacred sanctuary. Religious communities and Hindu priests visited the mountain to worship and perform ceremonies.

The temple was associated with the Hindu god Shiva, one of the principal deities in Hinduism. Shiva represents several aspects of divine power, including creation, preservation, and transformation.

The sanctuary became particularly associated with Shiva in his mountain-related manifestations, known as Sikharesvara and Bhadresvara.

The sacred mountain location was important because ancient Khmer religious beliefs connected mountains with divine realms. Establishing a sanctuary on a high mountain demonstrated the religious importance of the site.

During the reign of King Yasovarman I (889–910 AD), the Khmer Empire developed important religious and political institutions. The early development of Preah Vihear is associated with this period.

However, the temple was not constructed entirely during the reign of one king. It developed over several centuries, with successive Khmer rulers contributing to its expansion, decoration, and religious importance.

Preah Vihear Temple is the result of several generations of Khmer architectural development.

Its construction is generally associated with the period between the late ninth century and the twelfth century. Different architectural styles found throughout the complex demonstrate that construction took place over a long period.

Several Khmer kings played important roles in the development of the temple.

King Yasovarman I (889–910 AD)

King Yasovarman I was one of the important rulers in the early history of the Khmer Empire. His reign is associated with the development of religious establishments and the expansion of royal authority.

The earliest religious activities and foundations at Preah Vihear are connected with the period of his reign.

King Suryavarman I (1006–1050 AD)

King Suryavarman I was another important ruler associated with the development of Preah Vihear.

During his reign, the Khmer Empire strengthened its political and religious institutions. The temple underwent further development, and its architectural structures became increasingly elaborate.

King Suryavarman II (1113–1150 AD)

King Suryavarman II is particularly famous for constructing Angkor Wat, one of the greatest architectural achievements of the Khmer Empire.

His reign represents an important period in the development of Khmer architecture. Preah Vihear also reflects the artistic and architectural characteristics of this era.

The temple's construction was not simply a building project. It represented the religious devotion, political authority, engineering knowledge, and artistic achievements of the Khmer kings.

Archaeological research has identified several construction phases, demonstrating that the monument developed from earlier architectural traditions into a more sophisticated complex.

### 4\. Religious Purpose and Spiritual Significance

Preah Vihear Temple was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.

In ancient Khmer society, Hinduism played a significant role in royal ceremonies, religious beliefs, and political traditions.

Kings often supported the construction of temples because religious monuments demonstrated their devotion to the gods and reinforced their legitimacy as rulers.

Preah Vihear served as a sacred place where priests and religious communities could conduct ceremonies, worship Shiva, and maintain religious traditions.

The temple's mountain location also had symbolic importance. In Hindu cosmology, Mount Meru is considered the sacred centre of the universe and the home of the gods.

Although Preah Vihear is a natural mountain rather than Mount Meru itself, its elevated position and sacred architectural arrangement reflect the importance of mountain symbolism in Khmer religious architecture.

Over the centuries, religious traditions in Cambodia gradually changed. Theravada Buddhism eventually became the dominant religion of the country.

The temple's religious significance continued through changing historical periods, reflecting the ability of Cambodian sacred sites to remain important even when religious practices evolved.

### 5\. The Unique Architecture of Preah Vihear Temple

One of the most remarkable features of Preah Vihear Temple is its architectural layout.

The temple extends along an approximately 800-metre north-south axis. Its buildings are connected by stairways, walkways, courtyards, and ceremonial structures.

Unlike temples built around a central tower, Preah Vihear follows the natural mountain slope, creating a series of ascending architectural levels.

Its major architectural features include:

1\. The Five Main Gopuras

The temple contains five principal entrance pavilions, traditionally identified as Gopura I, II, III, IV, and V.

These structures connect different sections of the temple and create a ceremonial progression through the sacred complex.

Each entrance has distinctive architectural details, including sandstone decorations, carved stone elements, and impressive doorways.

2\. Stone Staircases

The staircases connect different levels of the mountain and allow visitors to move through the temple complex.

They demonstrate the engineering knowledge of ancient Khmer builders, who transported and arranged heavy sandstone blocks in a difficult mountainous environment.

3\. Naga Decorations

Naga sculptures are important features of Khmer religious architecture.

The Naga, or sacred serpent, represents protection, water, fertility, and spiritual power in Cambodian religious traditions.

Naga balustrades and related decorative elements help create a sacred atmosphere throughout the temple.

4\. Sandstone Carvings

The temple contains beautifully carved sandstone decorations, including religious figures, floral patterns, architectural ornaments, and mythological scenes.

These carvings demonstrate the high level of artistic skill achieved by ancient Khmer craftsmen.

5\. Sacred Sanctuaries

The central religious areas were designed for worship and religious ceremonies.

Their arrangement reflects the spiritual importance of the temple and the connection between its architecture and Hindu religious beliefs.

The combination of these elements makes Preah Vihear one of the most distinctive examples of Khmer temple architecture.

### 6\. The Decline of the Khmer Empire and the Changing Role of the Temple

During the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, the Khmer Empire experienced significant political, economic, and religious changes.

The influence of Angkor gradually declined, and political power shifted as new kingdoms emerged in the region.

Several factors contributed to these changes, including political conflicts, economic difficulties, environmental challenges, and transformations in regional trade and religious institutions.

As the Khmer Empire weakened, many large religious construction projects became less common.

Nevertheless, the historical and spiritual importance of Preah Vihear did not disappear.

The temple remained an important part of the cultural landscape of northern Cambodia.

Although its original Hindu religious functions changed over time, its structures continued to represent the artistic achievements and spiritual history of the Khmer people.

### 7\. Preah Vihear During the French Colonial Period

During the nineteenth century, European colonial powers became increasingly involved in Southeast Asian affairs.

France established its protectorate over Cambodia in 1863. Cambodia subsequently became part of French Indochina.

During this period, the borders between Cambodia and Siam, now Thailand, became subjects of diplomatic negotiations and geographical surveys.

An important agreement was signed between France and Siam in 1904. It established that the frontier in the relevant mountainous area would generally follow the watershed line.

A Franco-Siamese Mixed Commission was responsible for surveying and delimiting sections of the frontier.

In 1907, maps were produced by French officials and associated technical teams. One important map, commonly known as the Annex I map, placed Preah Vihear Temple on the Cambodian side of the boundary.

These maps later became central to the international legal dispute concerning the temple.

The colonial period was therefore extremely important in shaping the modern legal and geographical history of Preah Vihear.

However, it is important to distinguish the temple's ancient Khmer origins from the modern international boundary question. The temple was constructed centuries before the modern border was established.

### 8\. The International Court of Justice Judgment of 1962

One of the most important events in the modern history of Preah Vihear occurred in 1959, when Cambodia brought its territorial dispute concerning the temple before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), located in The Hague, Netherlands.

Cambodia requested the Court to determine sovereignty over the Temple of Preah Vihear and address the presence of Thai military personnel in the area.

The dispute involved the interpretation of the 1904 Franco-Siamese Treaty, the maps produced during the boundary survey, and the historical conduct of the two countries.

Thailand argued that the boundary should follow the watershed line and challenged the legal significance of the map that placed the temple within Cambodia.

Cambodia maintained that the map had been accepted and that the temple was situated within Cambodian territory.

On 15 June 1962, the International Court of Justice delivered its judgment.

The Court decided that:

* The Temple of Preah Vihear was situated in territory under the sovereignty of Cambodia.

* Thailand was required to withdraw its military or police forces and other personnel stationed at the temple or in its vicinity on Cambodian territory.

* Thailand was required to return certain objects removed from the temple and its surrounding area after 1954.

This judgment became a landmark decision in international law and an important moment in Cambodia's modern history.

It confirmed Cambodia's sovereignty over the temple itself and established an important legal foundation for its protection.

The judgment was particularly significant because it demonstrated that historical maps, diplomatic conduct, and international treaties can play important roles in resolving territorial disputes.

During the second half of the twentieth century, Cambodia experienced serious political instability and armed conflicts.

The country went through civil war, the Khmer Rouge period, the Vietnamese intervention, and subsequent political and military difficulties.

These events affected many historical and cultural sites throughout Cambodia.

Preah Vihear's remote mountainous location and proximity to the international border made the area particularly difficult to protect during periods of conflict.

Access to the temple was restricted at various times, and the surrounding area experienced military and political tensions.

The temple therefore remained relatively isolated from normal tourism and conservation activities for many years.

Despite these difficulties, Preah Vihear continued to represent an important part of Cambodia's national heritage.

Its survival through periods of political instability demonstrates the importance of protecting historical monuments even during difficult times.
